How do we Teach our Physics Tuition

  • Students start with 1 to 1 lessons to assess their starting point, to scaffold and to build foundation.
  • Individualised Learning Plans tailored to suit the student's pace and to cover gaps in their learning.
  • Scheduled lessons once a week for 2 hours which includes 15 mins of Q&A (students are encouraged to ask questions from their school work as well).
  • Daily Whatsapp, Telegram and Online Zoom support for students who need regular guidance (just message us your doubts and questions and we will clear it up with a reply or explain to you live via Zoom).
  • Extra lessons to catch up either via Zoom online or Physical Lessons at the tuition centre.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before students can excel at a subject, it is vital that they learn to enjoy the subject first. We utilise real life examples to help students link the concepts to situations that they can relate to, making understanding and memorisation much easier.

Physics lessons at Catalyst will emphasise heavily on the understanding of crucial concepts in the syllabus, with significant attention towards using crucial keywords and phrases. This ensures that you will be able to study efficiently and achieve your desired grade.

We also place a huge emphasis on the practise and mastery of certain question types/concepts which always come out in exams. This ensures that you would have already “secured” some marks before the exam itself!

Across multiple student cohorts, a significant proportion of those enrolled in our Physics program achieved an average grade of A2. Notably, a majority of our students demonstrated notable progress, with many experiencing an improvement of at least 3 grades (e.g., from C5 to A2). The earlier students enroll in our classes, the greater our confidence in enhancing their academic performance.

Over the last 5 years, an impressive 85% of our students have successfully secured an A or B in their O/A Levels or end-of-year examinations.

There are benefits to both home tuition and group tuition. 1 to 1 home tuition may help you to improve in terms of content knowledge, but the extent to which it can do so is limited.

Our group classes have been shown to improve content retention and the student's enjoyment of the subject. A few factors contribute to this:

  1. Students can associate memories of concepts to a dynamic environment with their classmates, compared to having a static home tuition context for all the lessons.
  2. The various paces, questions, and backgrounds of the other students in the class will motivate the student to keep pace and broaden their mindsets.
  3. Enjoying the class leads to an association of positive emotions with the subject, leading to appreciation of the subject and motivation to excel in it.

Our past students have commented that our group size is optimal, helping them to focus during lessons and also providing motivation from their peers.

Our tutors bring a wealth of experience and qualifications to their teaching roles, enthusiastically sharing their knowledge with students. What sets them apart is their expertise in guiding students through exam answering techniques—an aspect often overlooked by other centers.

Our lessons are dynamic and captivating, promoting collaboration between tutors and students. We cultivate an environment where there are no "dumb questions," encouraging everyone to seek clarification without hesitation. Additionally, our friendly tutors offer complimentary consultations when needed, ensuring that students receive the support they require.

Each class will have a maximum of 6 students.

At Catalyst, lessons generally start with 1 to 1 sessions to bridge your fundamentals, before placing the student in a small group of like-minded students to learn at a similar pace.

All our tutors have undergone MOE training, ensuring they possess the essential knowledge of the syllabus. Specifically, our Physics tutors are highly qualified, holding at least a Degree or Masters in related fields.

Our curriculum dedicates some time & attention for our tutors to cover practical answering techniques as well as basic hands on experiment and apparatus handling.

We do provide lab practice for areas where we consider important to prepare students for major exams like the O'levels and A'levels.

Our curriculum aligns closely with the MOE syllabus and mirrors that of the majority, if not all, schools in Singapore. Should your school incorporate an extra topic, our proficient tutors are eager to provide additional support and cover that specific subject matter at a separate session.

Physics requires a strong understanding of ideas, along with remembering definitions, formulas, and steps. At Catalyst, we teach our students effective memorisation techniques. We encourage them to concentrate on important words and phrases instead of trying to remember whole paragraphs. This method helps them study smarter and more efficiently.

Additionally, getting a complete grasp of Physics often involves using visual aids. We use different methods, such as specially selected videos, to help our students understand Physics concepts faster.

By combining a clear understanding of concepts with smart study methods, our students learn the most effective techniques to succeed in this subject.

Additional consultations at no extra charge are provided for all our students. This is to help students who need specific help for certain topics.

Physics Syllabus Design

Physics is a fundamental science which is concerned with understanding the natural world. A small number of basic principles and laws can be applied to explain and predict a wide range of physical events and phenomena.

The subject develops attitudes and dispositions such as critical thinking and logical analysis, a curious and inquiring mind, and the ability to solve problems and grasp complex concepts.

At Catalyst Maths & Science, we make learning physics interesting by connecting physics concepts to real-world applications. We believe in helping the learner draw links between textbook theory and real-world applications, which cultivates an appreciation of the subject. After which, the learner will develop the intrinsic motivation to dive into the learning material, and a more intuitive understanding of the concepts. The natural result of this would be excellence in their O-levels and A-levels.

Secondary Pure Physics Syllabus

The concepts and skills covered in the syllabus are organised along 6 Sections, taught through 2 years:

  • Measurements
  • Newtonian Mechanics
  • Thermal Physics
  • Waves
  • Electricity and Magnetism
  • Radioactivity

These 6 sections are then further broken down into 20 topics.

Having sufficient practice will allow you to know how to respond to different situations and excel in exams.

Effectively teaching the GCE O-Level Physics syllabus requires a comprehensive approach that blends theoretical understanding with practical applications. To capture students' interest, lessons should be engaging and interactive, incorporating real-world examples that highlight the relevance of physics concepts to their lives. The cultivation of critical thinking skills is crucial, achieved through a variety of exercises encompassing both numerical problem-solving and conceptual questions.

Practical demonstrations and experiments conducted in the laboratory serve to reinforce theoretical concepts, offering students hands-on experiences that enhance their understanding. A supportive learning environment that encourages active participation is essential, allowing students to pose questions and seek clarification, fostering a deeper grasp of the material.

The integration of modern teaching aids, such as simulations and multimedia resources, can further enhance comprehension, catering to diverse learning styles within the classroom. Regular assessments, including mock exams, provide students with opportunities to gauge their progress and identify areas for improvement.

At Catalyst, we fine tune our teaching to accommodate the learning of these various portions of Physics to ensure that you are well equipped with the skills and knowledge for your examinations.

Combined Science (Physics) Syllabus O-level Sec 3 and 4

Secondary Combined Physics Syllabus

The concepts and skills covered in the syllabus are organised along 5 Sections, taught through 2 years:

  • Measurement
  • Newtonian Mechanics
  • Thermal Physics
  • Waves
  • Electricity and Magnetism

These 4 sections are then further broken down into 19 topics.

The content covered in Combined Physics closely mirrors that of Pure Physics, excluding Radioactivity. The primary objective of Combined Science (Physics) is to provide a comprehensive overview of various physics topics, albeit with a focus on breadth rather than depth, in contrast to Pure Physics. This approach ensures a broad understanding of essential concepts while acknowledging the need for a more generalised knowledge base. The curriculum aims to strike a balance, covering a diverse range of physics principles without delving as deeply into each topic as Pure Physics does.
